June 12, 2026Speed-to-Lead: The Only Metric That Actually Predicts Your Close Rate
Forget marketing spend and pitch perfection for a moment. One number correlates more directly with close rate than anything else: how fast you respond to a lead.
By Lucas Harris, CEO & Lead Architect, Mission Hub
There's one number that correlates more directly with close rate than campaign quality or sales-pitch polish: how fast you respond to a lead.
What the research found
"The Short Life of Online Sales Leads," published in Harvard Business Review (James Oldroyd, Kristina McElheran, and David Elkington), studied how response time affects a company’s ability to qualify a lead, confirm it’s a real, viable prospect, not how often they win the business.
Companies contacting leads within one hour were roughly seven times more likely to qualify that lead than those waiting longer.
Qualification is a prerequisite to competing for the close at all. Winning after that still depends on price, fit, trust, and follow-up, but you can’t win a deal you never got the chance to qualify.
Why response speed works
A prospect fills out a form, calls, or texts because something triggered the need right then. They’re motivated, comparison shopping, and ready to move. Service professionals face an especially compressed window: a homeowner calling about a roof leak needs help immediately, not casually.
- Minutes: lead highly engaged, minimal competitor contact yet
- Within the hour: still solid, though the lead may compare options
- Several hours: qualification odds decline substantially
- Next day: lead has typically already selected someone else
AI systems respond instantly, 24/7, qualifying leads and surfacing priority prospects, so the person on your team spends their time closing instead of chasing cold leads.
